NASA Spends $1 Million on New Drone Tracking and Detection Research

Nasa's effort to track drones in the National Airspace continues with a new $1.33 million grant to researchers at North Carolina State University. The NC State project aims to develop high-performance communications, networking, and air traffic management systems.

The project has several elements. The researchers plan to use good ol' fashioned radar to detect and categorize consumer-grade drones. This is no easy task given the comparably small size of off-the-shelf UAVs to manned aircraft, so some computational signal parsing will probably be necessary. On the simpler side of things, the team plans to track common video and remote control signals that drones generate to follow them. Lastly, the team is taking on the task of tracking jamming signals that don't travel in straight lines. Overcoming the masking created by this intentional obfuscating signal will be a challenge that researchers are up for.

Part of the effort will be to educate other institutions about communications bands like 5G which rests in the millimeter wave zone of the spectrum.

Dual Spectrum Computer Vision Platform Revealed by Aerialtronics

This Monday Aerialtronics released Pensar, a twin-sensor computer vision platform for drones. Pensar combines a 30x zoom Sony daylight camera and a FLIR Boson thermal IR camera sensor data and parses it via a deep learning algorithm. The platform rests on the NVIDIA Jetson module for real-time processing and feedback.

With its real-time video processing, it can track objects for annotation, such as deviations in points of interest or blurring out people or signage for privacy reasons. Its computer vision algorithms are robust enough to read the characters on a license plate and virtually any other alphanumeric signage at a distance while in flight. Overall, the system decreases the time needed for post-processing and allows for in the moment emergency detection like gas leaks, or perimeter breeches when used for security surveillance.

Aeropmapper Talon Completes 30km BVLOS mission

Canadian UAV manufacturer Aeromao successfully completed a mission that brought its fixed-wing Aeromapper Talon 30km away from its operators, way beyond the limits of human line of sight. The Talon maintained communications and control link over the entire flight which measured 60km back and forth.

NASA Develops Safety System That Curbs Haywire Drones

According to Wired Researchers, Trish and Lou Glaab at NASA's Langley Research Center in Virginia have developed an in-flight diagnostic system that notifies drones about critical failures and forces them to land safely. The system, Safe2Ditch, uses algorithms to detect everything from structural failures to battery problems, and even shifts in cargo due to inclement weather.

NASA tests the next phase of its UAS traffic management system

On May 25, 2017, the FAA-designated Nevada UAS Test Site and its NASA Partners flew five different Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs or drones) demonstrating multiple operational scenarios, including parachute initiated emergency supply deliveries and aerial survey operations.  In addition to flying the specific NASA Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) Traffic Management (UTM) missions, the UAVs were flown beyond the pilot’s visual line of sight.  This was accomplished using strategically placed visual observers (VO) and sophisticated Command and control (C2), communication, detect, and avoid technologies.
