Intel CEO Brian Krzanich Proclaims Drone "Data is the New Oil" at InterDrone

Intel's investment in the commercial drone industry was on full display in its CEO, Brian Krzanich's keynote address this morning at InterDrone. Krzanich declared confidently that "data is the new oil," and demonstrated all the ways Intel is turning drones into turnkey data collecting devices.

"THOR": The New VTOL Airframe that Goes the Distance

Imagine detaching the rotor from a helicopter, attaching a brain to it, and calling it a drone. The Transformable HOvering Rotorcraft (THOR) prototype from the Singapore University of Technology and Design captures the simplicity of that concept and makes it functional. The unique airframe they built combines the distance covering capability of a fixed-wing with the quick take off of a quadcopter.

Drone safety – Critical for the growth of the industry

Boeing Patents Mid-Air Recharging System for Drones

Well-known aircraft manufacturer Boeing was granted a patent for a mid-air recharging system. Each aircraft or drone would be comprised of an electrically powered buoyant aircraft, a control system to maneuver the aircraft, and a retractable tether to couple the aircraft with a ground charging station. The aircraft would be able to disconnect autonomously when a call for a delivery is made.
